Welcome to the Tritt Computer Lab

The Tritt Tiger Foundation funds the computer lab manager position through its fundraising efforts throughout the school year.  The computer lab manager is responsible for maintaining the two computer labs, supporting the technology instruction within the labs and assisting grade level teachers with lesson plans to enhance the classroom curriculum.

Each teacher schedules time in the computer lab, usually on a recurring basis.  Often, they come in each week to work on keyboarding, writing projects, Internet research and sometimes just for some fun.  All students are monitored when using the Internet and are required to use child friendly search engines while at school.

Computer Lab News - Spring 2009

There has not been a dull moment in either of the computer labs.  Our Kindergarteners have been working hard on their math skills, learning math addition and subtraction facts, creating masterpieces in Kid Pix and beginning to work on keyboarding and word processing.  First grade is currently working on test taking stategies, math facts, and publishing their writing samples.  Second grade has been working on math, even beginning multiplication, reading and making connections, and creating timelines.  Third grade continues to practice their multiplication facts, demonstrate their science knowledge of conductors, insulators, and magnets using Kidspiration to sort objects by their properties, and creating timelines of people in their Social Studies unit.  Our fourth and fifth graders are conducting research using Cobb Virtual Library and various appropriate search engines, publishing their writing in Microsoft Word and practicing their math skills using Mega Math.

With the CRCT rapidly approaching, we have provided each student with the opportunity to practice test areas with their class in some way in the computer lab.  The older students have been using the online assessment system provided by the Georgia Department of Education and our younger students have been provided with other tools that are much easier to navigate on their own.  We have also provided opportunities in the media center and computer lab for classes to use the voting devices with the ActivBoards to demonstrate what they know.

I have been using Common Sense Media to find reviews for online resources for elementary school age children.  It has been a wonderful tool to weed out what doesn't work well.  Take time to visit this site to read reviews on games, movies, books, music and TV shows as well.

Computer Lab Update - December 2008

It is hard to believe that our school year is nearly half over.  All students have spent time in the computer lab or with the laptops in their classrooms.  Tritt Elementary student continue to demonstrate their superior technical knowledge and ability.  With our new technology standards, we’ve been refining our previous years’ lessons, as well as developing new lessons to match up with the curriculum.

Kindergarteners have been working in our Mega Math program mastering patterns, sets, and counting to ten.  Each student has had the opportunity to explore www.starfall.com, which they all love.  We have worked on sorting shapes and colors in Kidspiration and reviewing letter sounds in Kid Pix.  One class of Kindergarteners has “Tech Buddies”.  This class has teamed with a Fifth Grade class to create stories and illustrations done on the computer.  This arrangement has proven to be advantageous for both the older and younger students.  Your Kindergartener probably has brought home some of their creations from the computer lab.  After our Winter Break, our Kindergarteners will be learning how to use the computer keyboard to type word families in Microsoft Word.

The First Graders have worked on Mega Math mastering their addition facts and strategies.  Some classes have typed a sentence, and then illustrated it in Kid Pix.  Kidspiration has been a great tool for math, spelling, and weather activities.  You may have seen of this work come home in your child’s folder.  After our Winter Break in December, our first graders will be learning how to publish their own writing in Microsoft Word.  We will have a number of writing opportunities for First Grade.

The Tritt Second Graders have been introduced to keyboarding which helps them tremendously when they publish written work in Microsoft Word.  Mega Math has helped our second graders with their addition and subtraction facts, as well as working with money and telling time.  Some of our second graders have had the opportunity to work in Kid Pix illustrating a story they have written in the classroom.  It is always amazing to see the creativity that emerges from computer drawings.  Some of this work may have made it home already.

The Third Graders have begun to publish more and more of their written work using Microsoft Word.  Some classes have been able to insert clip art into their documents, adding a personal touch.  With the study of rocks in science, the third graders have been able to demonstrate their mastery of the subject in Kidspiration.  One class has used Kid Pix to illustrate multiplication arrays, which helps them visualize how multiplication works.  Other classes have created Power Point presentations in at least one subject area.  The students have enjoyed learning this new and valuable skill.

The Fourth Graders have been introduced to Internet research with their study of weather and explorers.  They’ve been shown how to use Cobb Virtual Library and Kid-Friendly Search Engines.  At school, students are not permitted to use Google unless they are under the direct supervision of a teacher.  They have been shown the resources available to kids to give them age appropriate content.  In addition, fourth graders are still learning to master the keyboard with both hands.  While some adults have demonstrated that “hunt and peck” works, we encourage students to use both hands and the correct finger placement.  The fourth graders will have opportunities coming up to create Power Point Presentations.  The teachers usually end up learning some new tools when watching the children build their masterpiece on the computer.  These will usually end up coming home on a CD.

The Fifth Graders have been working on keyboarding in preparation for Middle School.  At each teacher’s discretion, most fifth graders have been introduced to the online textbooks for Math, Science, and Social Studies.  As the students were told, these are by no means meant to replace the regular textbook, especially for homework due the next day.  The kids have been assured that an Internet outage or unavailability of a computer are not valid excuses for homework not completed.  Fifth graders have also conducted research using the Internet.  They’ve been shown how to use Cobb Virtual Library and Kid-Friendly Search Engines.  At school, students are not permitted to use Google unless they are under the direct supervision of a teacher.  They have been shown the resources available to kids to provide age appropriate content.  Most of the fifth graders have been able to publish their written work using Microsoft Word.

Computer Lab News

Our first 9 weeks are over and we have been busy in the Tritt Computer Labs.  Kindergarteners are working very hard on their numbers 1-10 and patterning.  Ask your Kindergartener about Mega Math!  They all seem to love it.

We even have a group of "tech buddies" that come to the lab once a month.  These "tech buddies" are a Kindergarten class teamed up with a Fifth Grade class.  Each Kindergartener in a certain class has at least one Fifth Grader assigned to help them during their lab time.  The Fifth Grader is responsible for providing one on one instruction to the Kindergartener.  So far, so good.

Our first graders have been publishing some of their written work, sorting pictures by vowel sounds and practicing their math facts.  Second graders have been working on their keyboarding skills and studying their math facts.  Third graders have been introduced to PowerPoint and Cobb Virtual Library as well as other researching sites.  Fourth and Fifth graders have been using Mega Math to cement their multiplication and division skills, keyboarding, typing poetry, and using the Internet for research.

We do have online textbooks available.  Harcourt Math (grades 3-5), Harcourt Science and Houghton Mifflin Social Studies are all available via the Tritt Web Links.  Please check with your teacher to see if your child's class has been introduced to the online versions of the texts they use in class.  Students have been advised that an Internet outage is not a valid excuse for missed homework, so plan accordingly for assignments due the following day!

Speaking of the Internet, please make sure you discuss with your child(ren) the importance of using Kid Friendly search sites.  While Google is a great tool, and I use it everyday, but it can produce some search results that may not be appropriate for children.  Too many times, I have heard students (my own children included) say, "Oh, I just Google'd it."  While it got them what they were looking for, it can also give them much more than they need.  The Tritt Web Site has links to numerous child friendly search engines.

Technology Standards

The last couple of weeks, we've been working with each teacher to implement the new technology standards.  It has been an exciting process to see that what we have been teaching all along is right where we need to be.  We've developed a few new lessons to freshen up our repertoire.  Each Cobb County student will be assessed on their use of technology, but our Tritt Tigers are ahead of the game.  Not only do our students get exposed to a variety of technology at school, most children love to tell about their technology at home (games, computers, fancy TV sets, iPods, etc.).  It can be a challenge sometimes to know more than the kids about technology.

We've completed the beginning of the year testing and have been going right into our lessons with writing, drawing, keyboarding.  Look for some neat things to come home in the near future.  Check your child's hallway, too!  We try to display as much of our computer work as possible.  If you have any questions, please contact the Computer Lab Manager.

Welcome Back Tigers!

We have had a great first couple of weeks in the Tritt Computer Labs!  Our brand new kindergarten Tigers have been exploring Kid Pix, how to stamp their names, finding stamps they like and following directions as well as using STARFALL on the Internet.  First graders have been making webs about themselves or what they did over the summer.  Our second through fifth graders have gotten right down to business with beginning of the year reading assessments.  I am sure your teachers will share this information shortly if they haven't already.

No big software changes to report this school year.  The county purchased an upgrade for a couple of applications over the summer and they were installed before school started.  We will receive one more upgraded program for use in the computer lab.

Stay tuned for more exciting news as we implement the new Georgia Technology Standards!  You will be amazing at what your children can do!
