With the first week of November comes many new topics for us to talk about. This is a quick month (3 weeks to be exact) and we are using our time wisely. Everything we are learning about now will lead up to a memorable tradition at Tritt. On November 20th, the Kindergarten team will gather for our annual Thanksgiving Feast. Each class comes dressed as Pilgrims or Native Americans. Crandall's Cubs represent the Pilgrims with pride.
Here is what we've accomplished this week:
Language Arts: Our letter of the week was Nn. This nifty letter is, not only at the beginning of the new month, but also, it is the first letter of a very important group at the first Thanksgiving. (I'm always looking for a segway!) The students had fun playing "beginning and ending letter sound" tic-tac-toe with the letter N on the Activboard. Our poem of the week was about the Native Americans. We read books in guided reading groups about nutrition - yes, another "n" word!
In writing, the students have spent weeks writing about themselves or things that are important to them. This week, we interviewed a friend in the class and then wrote about them in our journal. This is a verydifficult task for this age group. We worked in small groups and shared our writing with each other. I am thrilled to see the kids putting spaces between their words independently and most are sounding out words well too! Keep practicing at home. It truly makes a difference.
Math:We continued our geometry unit. In math centers the students, sorted, traced and labeled shapes. They made shapes with geoboards. They also made 2-and 3-dimensional shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows. They loved doing this activity Miss Gomez. FInally, the students went around the classroom and labeled shapes that they identified. There are pink sticky notes all over the place! Next week we will focus more on 3- dimensional shapes. Thanks to Science Lab this week, we've already had an introduction.
Science:In Science Lab this week the topic was about motion. The students identified different 3-dimensional shapes and predicted how they move and how far. As I mentioned before, this tied in nicely with our geometry unit.
Social Studies: We began our discussion about Thanksgiving. This week we focused on why the pilgrims came to America and how the Native Americans helped them. Next week, we compare life as a pilgrim to our own lives
