Hankerson Fire Safety Village

Dear Parents,

On Thursday, November 12th our class will be taking a trip to the Hankerson Fire Safety Village.  Please have your child wear pants or jeans, Tritt t-shirt (if they have one) and tennis shoes.  Girls should not wear dresses because we will be climbing and crawling.  The firefighter also asked the girls to not wear ponytails because they will be wearing bike helmets at some point.

Please send in a nutritious snack for your child to eat before we leave school.  I'm not sure what time we are eating but it could be late, so please eat a good breakfast and bring in a snack.  Thanks.  Also, if you said you would be bringing a lunch from home you need to make sure you remember it.  Our lunch count has been turned in to the cafeteria so I'm sure those buying a lunch will have one.  I know we will have a fun day!  Let's hope there's no rain in the forecast since lately that is all we get!  If you have any questions you can write me a note.  Mrs. Womble

We have a very busy next two weeks!

Dear Parents,

Those persuasive letters your children wrote to you about an unusual animal were awesome!!!  Don't worry, I'll save them for you because you'll want to share this with your child when they are older and will appreciate them.  I really was expressed with your letters you wrote to them regarding whether they could have that animal.  Now I know why I have great writers ---because you all are great writers yourself!!!  Look for your child's letters outside the room by next Friday, the 13th.

Next Thursday we have a Fire Safety Fieldtrip all day.  Please don't forget to pack your child's lunch if you said on the red form that they would be bringing a lunch from home.  I still do not have everybody's permission slip and in order to leave the school I'll need that.  Please send it in ASAP and don't forget to look on the back for your lunch choices.  Thanks!

On Monday, November 16th we have our historical presentations.  Mary Musgrove and Sequoyah will be coming to Tritt.  If they are anything like James Oglethorpe and Tomochichi were, then we are in for a show!!!  I thought the last two were amazing, well worth the money spent!

On Tuesday, November 17th Mrs. Womble's class will present The Twelve Hours of Thanksgiving and parents are invited to see their child perform!  We will begin practicing for this on Monday.  Please meet us in the cafeteria on Tuesday morning, the 17th at 7:50.  We will begin promptly at 8:00 because 1st grade will need to get in the cafeteria to practice for their Thanksgiving play that they do every year.  It's important to be on time too because this play/song only takes 10-15 minutes and you don't want to miss your child perform.  I hope some of the dads can come too since it's early in the morning, hopefully before work for some of you!  Bring your cameras.

Our class won a Recess Party for all those Box Tops you have been sending in to school.  The kids are excited and they voted to have Sugar Free Fruit pops!  We will hopefully have our party on Wednesday, November 18th if that works out.  Anyway it will be before Thanksgiving.

So we have a very busy two weeks!  I hope each and everyone of you have a wonderfuland safe Thanksgiving (if you are traveling).  We all have a lot to be thankful for at this time.  Enjoy family and friends and I'll see you back in school on Monday, November 30th.  Then we can plan for December and all the fun for that month!  Take Care,  Mrs. Womble

Camp Day was a huge success!!!

Dear Parents,

My room moms are awesome!!!  Thank you to Kathleen Amsterdam and Julie Resh for organizing Camp Day!!!  Yesterday was so much fun!!!  I know your children left school exhausted from the day's activities, but it was a blast! (I left exhausted!)  The centers were the best!!!  The games like charades were cool!  The trail mix and apple cider that you all brought in was so good also.  Mrs. Desio playing the autoharp, while we sang with our book buddies, as well as being our storyteller for Caps for Sale, a hit!!!   I have talented parents!!!  We enjoyed S'mores while we watched It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.  Then we told ghost stories in the big tent (provided by Sierra's parents) with our flashlights.  Then it was time to go home as the children said, " I don't want to go home".  I think this was the best day  so far for them.  I'm glad it was such a fun day!

Mrs. Hilarie Straka's last day is this Friday.  She's the best assistant principal I've known!  She is retiring from Tritt after 30+ years.  If you would like to write her a nice note and send it to school with your child that would be great.  I will make sure it gets to her.  I know I'm doing something for her.  Thanks,  Mrs. Womble

The wedding was fantastic! Now I'll be in school to the end!

Dear Parents,

We have had a busy week as always!!!  I'm sorry I haven't communicated on typepad as much as I need to.  It seems like I'm always writing notes or calling these days.

Next week is going to be a fun week for our class.  We start with Camp Day on Tuesday, October 27th with a lot of fun activities and learning also.  Please dress like a camper on that day. Wear comfortable tennis shoes for our nature hike.  Please send in a towel with your child instead of sleeping bags.  It's a lot easier when we pack up to go home.  You may also send in a flashlight and a water bottle.  As you can see from the letter from our wonderful room moms, it's going to be a fun-filled day!  I really appreciate all of our volunteers for centers, storytelling, hiking, etc..  Thank you!!!

Our Living History Presentations will be on Thursday, October 29th from 9:00-10:00.  The first two presenters will be James Oglethorpe and Chief Tomichichi.  I look forward to hearing them discuss their contribution to Georgia history.  They will also explain their culture and customs. This is a standard in our curriculum so I hope the children learn a lot!!!

On Friday, October 30th Second Grade will have a Mad Scientist Day with fun experiments related to Matter. Your child will rotate to different classrooms for some fun Science!  It will be an awesome day for the day before Halloween.  This will take place from 12:30-2:00, and yes TARGET will come back and participate with us.  We don't want them to miss out.

Have a great weekend and if you ever have any questions or concerns you can E-mail me.

ASSESSMENTS BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Parents,

Your child is bringing home their red folder today with a lot of assessments in every subject area.  You will know they are assessments because they all have a rubric on the papers.  Yes, I know this is OVERWHELMING with the number of rubrics!  Please don't expect this every week.  If your child has gotten a 1 on a rubric, please work with them at home.  These are the standards for second grade and you all were given this at Open House, all the standards for the 1st quarter.  If you have any questions about your child's work, please E-mail me at school and I'll get back to you.  Please send back their writing assessment on the left side of the folder.  I want to keep them.  They also took an SRI test this week and a lot of the children came up!  Yeah!!!  We read a lot!  If your child is below reading then they should be reading every night for 20 minutes and you should be asking them questions.  I can tell some are reading the words, but they don't know what they are reading.  This is a problem!

The Boosterthon is here at Tritt!  Go to funrun.com and enter your child's access code.  It is located on the front of the top secret folder.  Everyone was given one of these on Monday.  If you don't know your child's code then E-mail me at school and I'll give it to you.  Please enter your information and enter your pledges.  Our class is trying to best the best we can be!!!

If your child is doing Reflections, the entries are due October 9th.  Please try and do this.  You could be a winner!!!

Tritt Trott is Saturday, October 10th.  Please try to come and be a part of this.  This is the day of my daughter's wedding and  I won't be at Tritt Trott but we are running that morning for Cancer.  Have fun at Screen on the Green too!

Picture Make up day will be October 21st.  If you have any questions about this you can contact Suzanne Alea in the front office.

Have a great weekend and try to stay dry!  Rain is in the forecast.  I almost was a weather girl!  Loved that in college!  Take care!  Mrs. Womble

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS TO STUDENTS

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS TO STUDENTS

Dear Parent/Guardian:

On September 8, President Barack Obama will host a special address directed to schoolchildren, which will be broadcast live on the Internet and on television.

As you know, the Cobb County School District focuses on instruction and teaching the state curriculum, the Georgia Performance Standards, so that students can achieve – and exceed – their personal and educational goals. Daily instructional time is a precious resource; therefore, schools are under no obligation to broadcast the 15-20 minute speech.

In the event a school plans to show the broadcast, parents will be notified ahead of time. Parents who do not wish for their child to view the Presidential address or participate in any class discussion on the topic should complete this form and return it to their child’s teacher by September 8. No child will be penalized if he or she does not participate in activities related to the address.

Families also have the option of watching the President’s speech with their children outside of the school day, available on the following Web sites after the live broadcast:

• The White House (http://www.whitehouse.gov/mediaresources)

• U.S. Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov)

• C-SPAN (http://www.cspan.org)

Additional information about the President’s address is available at http://www.ed.gov.

Sincerely,

Becci Rutledge

Principal

I do not wish for my child, ______________________________________________________,
to view the Presidential address or participate in any class discussion on the topic.

It was great to see so many at Open House!!!

Dear Parents,

I loved it that so many of you showed up for Open House.  It was great meeting you again and having time to discuss this year!  If you have any questions about school please E-mail me at annbryan.womble@cobbk12.org.  Your child's Spelling test is coming home today in the red folder.  If you got the challenge test you can study that for your test on Thursday.  If you did not get the challenge words, please study the basic words.  The Spelling contract will be optional, but if you really want to challenge your child I'd do some of the things on it (if you have time).  Please remember to read every night for 20 minutes, either with your child or not, depending on their level of reading.  I do tend to give homework every night.  Please let me know if it gets to be too much for your child.  I really am not trying to stress them out.  Everything that goes home for homework is a skill that your child needs to know.  I'm hoping that we can work together as a team for the benefit of your child.  That is my foremost concern always.  I can't wait to see the growth this year.

Your child has been taking A.R. Test this Friday and they are all doing great!!!  I am so proud of them!  Also, if your child would like to bring a water bottle in to school they can!  They do get thirsty during the day.  Please don't forget to send in a nutritious snack.  Not everyone had one today and they do get hungry before lunch.

Our room moms this year are Julie Resh and Kathleen Amsterdam.  We had a huge response and I truly appreciate everyone wanting to help out.  We plan on meeting next week and we will be back in touch with you as to what we have planned this year.  My favorite thing by far is Camp Day!  Thank you again for your dedication to your child.  I already know that this is going to be a fantastic year!!!  Have a great weekend and please do not hesitate to E-mail me if you have any questions.

                                                                             Sincerely,  Mrs. Womble

P.S.  Weekly work papers come home on Fridays with your child.  Please review the work that they missed.  There is no need to return any of the papers.  Thanks!

What a busy 1st week!

Dear Parents,
I just wanted to let you know what a great 1st week of school we had!!!  The first couple of weeks is basically getting to know the children, their strengths and weaknesses and working on routines.  We have been very busy and we have a surprise for you at Open House, which is next Thursday, August 27th. Don't ask your child, it's a surprise! I look forward to seeing everyone.  Please be at school on time.  PTA starts at 6:00, then there will be 2 rotations, one from 6:30-7:00 and another one from 7:05-7:35.  There is always so much to cover at Open House.  Please have your questions ready for me and I'll try my best to answer them.  Hope to see you Thursday, August 27th.
